Every year, the fur of millions of cats and dogs in China and other parts of Asia is made into garments and exported for sale in other countries. An EU ban on the import, export, and trade of cat and dog fur, which became effective on January 1, will ensure that EU citizens are not unknowingly contributing to this gruesome and cruel practice. HSI is asking Chinese New Year revelers not to consume shark fin soup.

A Happy New Year for sharks?

As global shark fin consumption reaches its annual peak for the Chinese New Year on January 26, HSI is urging revelers to forego the customary holiday bowls of shark fin soup.

Meanwhile, there is some good news for these important predators:

  • At a recent meeting of the Convention on Migratory Species, HSI staff successfully lobbied for better safeguards for some shark species and steps towards broadening global protection.
  • And in early January, U.S. Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo reintroduced the Shark Conservation Act to provide increased protection for vulnerable shark species.
