A cat found in a sealed box in the middle of Auckland's Northwestern Motorway may be in for a name change.

Sapphire Cat Rescue manager Dianne O'Connor told the Weekend Herald a woman driving towards Auckland spotted the box, pulled over and was shocked to find the shorthaired tabby cat inside.

O'Connor said as the box was taped up and without airholes it appeared to be a deliberate act.

"We should call the cat 'Lucky', because someone could have quite easily bowled over it."

The cat, which was between 2 and 4 years old, had been checked over by a vet and found to be very good condition.

Because the cat had no collar or microchip it had not been identified.

It was in a foster home until its owners could be found.
