Pawprints on My Heart - Revised Edition

The latest edition of my first book, Pawprints on My Heart, arrived yesterday, just two days after its second anniversary.

Pawprints was written on Earth Hour two years ago, in 2008. It was the first time observing Earth Hour for me, and we had turned off all the lights. Having nothing to do for a whole hour, I remembered I had promised some friends I would write my first non-academic book, so I sat down and started writing.

And that was how Pawprints got off the ground.

I would like to thank all sponsors for contributing to the printing of this new revised edition. There are now another 3000 brand new copies that will be given out for free distribution. With this new edition, there would be a total of 12,000 copies in circulation now.

If you have a copy of Pawprints, and have already read it, do please pass it on to a friend so that the message of kindness to animals can spread to more people.

The latest edition of Pawprints and one of its stars, Bobby.

Pawprints was my tribute to Earth Hour, 2008.

This new edition is done in a new layout, with pawprints walking across the pages.

An e-version of this book is available here for free download:

Support SPCA's call to review HDB ban on cats

Support SPCA's call to review HDB ban on cats
I REFER to the letter from Ms Deirdre Moss, executive officer of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) 'Allowing cats in HDB flats would result in less irresponsibility' (The New Paper, 22 Mar).

I fully support the SPCA's call to review the ban on cats in HDB flats.

It is mainly because of the ban that we have the problem of stray cats.

Animals like cats have been medically proven to be helpful in providing a source of comfort to patients, especially those who are autistic, suffer from depression or are bed-ridden.

The authorities have been advocating responsible pet ownership and with that, we should be able to get rid of this problem.

Culling of animals should not even be considered before all the alternatives are explored.

All Dogs Do NOT Go to Heaven, Atheists Rescue Pets After the ‘Rapture’

All Dogs Do NOT Go to Heaven, Atheists Rescue Pets After the ‘Rapture’

March 13, 2010

(ChattahBox)—Despite the premise of the 1980s animated film series, “All Dogs Go to Heaven,” many fundamental Christians believe that their pets have no souls. When the end of days finally arrives and Jesus returns to earth to gather up his saints, all of the believers’ beloved cats and dogs will be left behind to starve and face the apocalypse alone. So, what is a devoted pet owner and firm believer in the Rapture to do? Hire an official blasphemer and card-carrying atheist, who has been thoroughly vetted as a profane sinner with no chance of salvation according to Mark 3:29, of course! A company called Eternal Earth-Bound Pets, USA has gathered a motley crew of about 100 reprobates in 22 states, who are also animal lovers, and will rescue pets abandoned after the Rapture for a small, non-refundable fee of $110.

Eternal Earth-Bound Pets is the brainchild of Bart Centre, 61, a retired resident of New Hampshire, who apparently became bored working part-time at the local Home Depot and decided to try something different. Why not make a buck off of the crazy Christian fundamentalists waiting for the Rapture to occur? Centre’s sales pitch, inscribed on t-shirts, coffee mugs, bumper stickers and the like says it all: “The next best thing to pet salvation in a post rapture world.”

“If you love your pets,” says Centre, “I can’t understand how you could not consider this.”

The Eternal Earth-Bound Pets Web site explains the simple premise of its post-rapture services:

“You’ve committed your life to Jesus. You know you’re saved. But when the Rapture comes what’s to become of your loving pets who are left behind? Eternal Earth-Bound Pets takes that burden off your mind. We are a group of dedicated animal lovers, and atheists. Each Eternal Earth-Bound Pet representative is a confirmed atheist, and as such will still be here on Earth after you’ve received your reward. Our network of animal activists are committed to step in when you step up to Jesus.”

Centre assures potential clients that he screens all pet rescuers to make sure they are indeed atheists and have no plans “to meet the Lord in the air” when the second coming arrives:

“We are currently active in 22 states. Our representatives have been screened to ensure that they are atheists, animal lovers, are moral / ethical with no criminal background, have the ability and desire to rescue your pet and the means to retrieve them and ensure their care for your pet’s natural life.”

Once you pay your fee of $110, the rapture pet rescue contract is good for 10 years. If the rapture doesn’t come by that time, too bad. What if blasphemous loved ones are left behind and are able to care for the pets — Will they receive a refund? No. How long will it take for the atheist pet rescuers to arrive? Fluffy and Rocky will be rescued, as soon as possible, considering there will be widespread destruction and chaos:

“Naturally, we must anticipate that there will be widespread chaos and confusion immediately following the Rapture that could impact travel times. Thus, we are targeting a maximum of between 18- 24 hours from realization of the Rapture, to animal rescue.”

Sounds like a great deal! When the Rapture finally arrives you can rise up to heaven to the sweet sound of Gabriel’s trumpet, with the peace of mind that your pets will be cared for after the apocalypse. And for those folks who care to plan ahead, after all, Eternal Earth-Bound Pets’ contract is only good for 10 years, the Web site RaptureReady, has a handy dandy rapture index, which chronicles a “Dow Jones Industrial Average of end time activity.” Some of the rapture signs are, mark of the beast, earthquakes, liberalism, civil rights, unemployment and globalism.

“The higher the number, the faster we’re moving towards the occurrence of pre-tribulation rapture.” A rapture index above 160 falls into the category of “fasten your seat belts.” The current end of times index is 170!! That means it’s time to contact Eternal Earth-Bound Pets.

Whose tongue can do MORE harm? A human or a cat's?

Cute kitty

Dangers of allowing your home cats to roam out!

A "new" un-neutered cat in the neighbourhood! He is either a free-roaming home cat or newly abandoned, or being relocated by some "kind hearted" pest controller who defied order to send cats to AVA where they will be killed, almost immediately, for such un-neutered cats, or abandoned by "cruel" owners!
This "new" cat will be trapped for neutering.

The whitish cat is called Lucky and owned by a Malay family on the second storey. Luckily he is neutered but unlikely he is allowed to roam out, despite repeated warning to the family of dangers including of allowing Lucky to roam out, that includes being trapped by the town council's pest controller as his ear is NOT tipped.

This morning, an un-tipped newbie appeared and while attempting to trap him, he ran to the roof where Lucky went to "kay-poh" ("investigate out of curiosity"). Fortunately there was no fight this time but next there could be injuries.

Giving up a cat because of a child

This is an article about a woman who had to give up her cat because her son was severely allergic. I think she was as responsible as she could be - her son was suffering, and she had found a new home with her brother.

What DOES bother me though are the people who still think that just in 'case' a child is allergic, an animal should be tossed out of the house. I remember a couple who came to adopt a cat. The then-fiancee was obviously less interested in the cat but was agreeable to the adoption. Things got worse after they got married - and the minute they had a baby, the cat was tossed out. Not because the baby was allergic - just because it was a cat and it had to go.

People often wonder why it is that children seem more allergic these days than in the past - as many of you know if you've been reading the blog long enough, I think it has to do with desensitisation. Farm studies seem to back this up.

Allowing cats in HDB flats would result in less irresponsibility,4136,234250,00.html

The Electric New Paper :

Allowing cats in HDB flats would result in less irresponsibility
I REFER to the report 'Residents get catty over mess' (The New Paper, 2Mar) and the letters 'Ban against cats should be lifted' and 'H...DB ban unfair to cat lovers' (The New Paper, 6 Mar).
23 March 2010

The SPCA supports the call for the longstanding ban on keeping of cats to be reviewed by HDB.

Abandonment and straying of owned cats is a common problem, resulting in many complaints which affect the status of sterilised community cats.

The SPCA believes that permitting cats to be kept as pets in HDB flats would call for more accountability by owners (who are at present keeping cats), and result in less irresponsibility.

Cats actually are very suitable for apartment living.

SPCA has always advocated that pets be kept responsibly and in consideration of one's neighbours.

Residents could be permitted to keep cats on the proviso that they are sterilised, microchipped and kept indoors.

Together with a government-aided programme (along the lines of the Stray Cat Rehabilitation Scheme which was halted abruptly in 2003) carrying out sterilisation of community cats, we feel both initiatives would go a long way towards solving the straying cat problem.

We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate.

The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being.

For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film.

HOME has been made for you : share it! And act for the planet.

Skate Migrate against Cat Hate

Skate Migrate against Cat Hate (facebook)

Dini and I, Jon Jon, are active members of NTU Cat Management Network (NTU CMN). On 4th April 2010, we hope to embark on an estimated 108km trip around Singapore on our longboards. Sounds ridiculous?

Not as ridiculous as the fact that 27 cats are culled every 24 hours in Singapore.

There are many ways to take action and help. The most rewarding is to be a Cat Caregiver or volunteer with either NTU CMN or Cat Welfare Society.

The easiest is to donate to either organization. Even a dollar will go a long way in helping these two wonderful organizations give care to our feline friends.

Please lend us your support as we prepare ourselves for this trek. We'll be updating this page (hopefully) or our personal pages with pictures and videos of the actual trip as it happens.

This event is an independent project by Dini and I and not run/managed by either NTU CMN or CWS. Thus we won't be accepting donations personally.

While responding with an "Attending" for this event does not mean that you'll really be attending the trek with us and is instead a show of solidarity and support, we would really appreciate it if you could take your 'attendance' to the next level of support by making a contribution to the NTU CMN or CWS.
